چکیده

We have measured the concentration dependence of the transmission conduction electron spin resonance linewidth of copper doped with Li, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Ni, and Ti. In each case, we find a linear concentration dependence which allows us to determine a spin-flip cross-section, 03C3sf, for each impurity. These crosssections, together with those deduced from linewidth data previously published for other impurities (both magnetic and not), form a useful body of results and allow one to test spin-flip scattering models. We find an overall agreement of our values for 03C3sf for transition metal impurities with estimates based on the Friedel virtual bound state model, including a spin-orbit interaction. For specific impurities (Zn, Ga, Ge, and As) we find that 03C3sf is determined by the charge contrast between the impurity and the copper host as was noted earlier from similar studies based on Li and Na by Asik, Ball, and Slichter. A particular situation is present with Li as an impurity in copper, interpreted as a « spin-orbit hole », which, together with the other results, confirm that the spin-orbit difference between the impurity and the host is the relevant spin-orbit parameter for 03C3sf. Impact of electron-impurity scattering on the spin relaxation time in graphene: a first-principles study.

The effect of electron-impurity scattering on momentum and spin relaxation times in graphene is studied by means of relativistic ab initio calculations. Assuming carbon and silicon adatoms as natural impurities in graphene, we are able to simulate fast spin relaxation observed experimentally. We investigate the dependence of the relaxation times on the impurity position and demonstrate that C o...

Magnetically controlled impurities in quantum wires with strong Rashba coupling

We investigate the effect of strong spin-orbit interaction on the electronic transport through nonmagnetic impurities in one-dimensional systems. When a perpendicular magnetic field is applied, the electron spin polarization becomes momentum-dependent and spin-flip scattering appears, to first order in the applied field, in addition to the usual potential scattering. We analyze a situation in w...

Band-Structure Effects in the Spin Relaxation of Conduction Electrons

Spin relaxation of conduction electrons in metals is significantly influenced by the Fermi surface topology. Electrons near Brillouin zone boundaries, special symmetry points, or accidental degeneracy lines have spin flip rates much higher than an average electron. A realistic calculation and analytical estimates show that these regions dominate the spin relaxation, explaining why polyvalent me...

Effect of Static Disorder in an Electron Fabry – Perot Interferometer with Two Quantum Scattering Centers

The key role that entanglement plays in quantum information processing has been investigated over the past few years [1]. In this framework, the role that it plays in quantum transport in mesoscopic systems has been analyzed [2]. Recently, we have shown a novel way in which entanglement can be used for controlling electron transport in nanostructures [3]. Assume that we have a 1D wire, where tw...
